Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies

As a loving mom, there’s nothing that warms my heart more than seeing the smiles on my family’s faces when they indulge in a homemade treat.

Baking isn’t just about creating something sweet; it’s about creating memories and traditions that last a lifetime.

Today, I want to share with you one of my family’s most cherished recipes: Grandma’s Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.

Passed down through generations, these cookies embody love, warmth, and deliciousness.

Why should you soften your butter before baking cookies?

Before we dive into the recipe, let’s talk about the importance of softened butter.

Softened butter plays a crucial role in baking, especially when it comes to cookies.

When butter is at room temperature, it’s easier to cream with sugar, creating a light and fluffy texture.

This helps incorporate air into the dough, resulting in cookies that are soft and tender.

So, take the time to let your butter soften before starting the baking process.

How to soften butter faster?

If you are like me and forget to let your butter sit out before baking the cookies.

Fill a glass with warm water and let the butter sit in the warm water for 2-3 minutes.

It should soften fairly quickly!

How do you properly store cookies?

Now, onto how to store Chocolate Chip Oatmeal Cookies.

If your family doesn’t devour them all in one sitting (which, let’s be honest, can be quite a feat), it’s essential to store the cookies properly to maintain their freshness throughout the week.

Once cooled completely, transfer the cookies to an airtight container lined with parchment paper.

This will prevent them from becoming stale or absorbing any unwanted odors from the fridge.

Stored this way, they should stay fresh for up to a week, although they rarely last that long in my household!

But what if you want to have freshly baked chocolate chip oatmeal cookies at a moment’s notice?

Well, you’re in luck because you can freeze some of the dough for later use.

Simply scoop the dough onto a baking sheet lined with parchment paper, making sure the dough balls are spaced apart.

Pop the baking sheet into the freezer until the dough balls are firm, then transfer them to a freezer-safe bag or container.

When the craving strikes, you can bake the frozen dough straight from the freezer, just adding a couple of extra minutes to the baking time.

  • 1 cup (2 sticks) unsalted butter, softened
  • 3/4 cup packed brown sugar
  • 3/4 cup granulated sugar
  • 2 large eggs
  • 2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 1 teaspoon baking soda
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 2 cups quick oats
  • 1 1/2 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

For thawing: Begin by taking your dough balls out of the freezer and placing them on a baking sheet lined with parchment paper.

Cover them lightly with a cloth towel or napkin to allow them to thaw.

After about 1-2 hours at room temperature, they should be ready to bake according to your recipe’s instructions (usually at 350 degrees F).

For baking from frozen: Start by arranging the frozen dough on a parchment-lined baking sheet.

Then, preheat your oven to 350 degrees Fahrenheit and place the cookies in the oven as soon as you start preheating.

This way, they can begin baking right away. After 15 minutes, remove the cookies from the oven; they might appear slightly browner on top than usual, but rest assured, they’ll still be delicious.

Instructions:

Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and line baking sheets with parchment paper.

In a large mixing bowl, cream together the softened butter, brown sugar, and granulated sugar until light and fluffy.

Add the eggs, one at a time, beating well after each addition.

In a separate bowl, whisk together the flour, baking soda, and salt. Gradually add the dry ingredients to the wet ingredients, mixing until just combined.

Stir in the oats and chocolate chips until evenly distributed throughout the dough.

Using a cookie scoop or spoon, drop rounded tablespoons of dough onto the prepared baking sheets, spacing them about 2 inches apart.

Bake in the preheated oven for 10-12 minutes, or until the edges are golden brown.

Allow the cookies to cool on the baking sheets for a few minutes before transferring them to a wire rack to cool completely.
